How Hard Seltzer is Made

If you’ve found yourself cracking open a hard seltzer, you might be curious about what’s in it and how it’s made. Hard seltzer is becoming a fast growing industry. Here at Loki & Co. we are excited to see the rise in popularity for hard seltzer beverages. Since this in a new concept lets learn a bit more about what hard seltzer is and most importantly how it is made.

What is hard seltzer?

Hard seltzer is carbonated water mixed with alcohol and fruit flavours, sometimes known as spiked seltzer, alcoholic seltzer, or hard sparkling water. Ultimately, it is a flavoured sparkling water that contains alcohol. These fruit flavours might come from real fruit juice or artificial flavouring, depending on the hard seltzer brand. Here at Loki & Co. our hard seltzer’s are flavoured with natural fruit ingredients.

What’s in hard seltzer?

Commercial hard seltzers are prepared in two techniques. Some can include mixing water, carbon dioxide, neutral alcohol, and flavouring. Fermenting, carbonating, and flavouring a sugar solution can also be used in hard seltzers. Citrus, berries, and tropical fruits, to name a few, are some of the most popular flavours of hard seltzers. Other flavours include:

  • Black cherry

  • Blood orange

  • Cranberry

  • Guava

  • Hibiscus

  • Kiwi

  • Grapefruit

  • Watermelon

At Loki & Co. we have a wide variety of flavours such as apple and elderflower, strawberry and lime, and orange and mango.

How is hard seltzer made?

The fermentation process is first, like with any alcoholic beverage, it is the key to its alcohol quality. All you need in terms of fermentation is corn sugar, usually known as dextrose.

Secondly, the yeast absorbs any sugars present and transforms them to alcohol throughout this process. Hard seltzer is made from fermented cane sugar in its purest form. Some methods can also use malted barley. However, at Loki & Co. we are proud to offer a gluten free hard seltzer for our consumers.

The alcohol concentration of most hard seltzers is between 4% and 6% alcohol by volume (ABV). The Loki & Co. hard seltzer has a 4% ABV and is only 100 calories. The amount of ABV in a hard seltzer has a direct effect on the number of calories contained.

Lastly, flavouring is added either artificially or naturally.

That wraps up our post on Loki & Co.’s how hard seltzer is made. We hope you learned something about this fast growing industry. If you have any questions or comments about anything featured in this post, feel free to email us & hello@lokidrinks.com.
